of Albany Livingston Parish has eight municipalities, with Denham Springs being the largest. Other municipalities are Albany, French Settlement, Killian, Livingston (the parish seat), Port Vincent, Springfield and Walker. As in the past, the harvesting of forest products and being the parish seat still plays a major role in the economic life of the Parish. Livingston Parish has had explosive growth over the past 10 years. In 2005 Hurricane Katrina had a devastating effect of the area. With New Orleans suffering the brunt of the blow and Livingston Parish barely effected. This caused a major population shift. People from New Orleans, Saint Bernard and Chalmette started pouring into Livingston Parish for shelter and our excellent school system. Denham Springs and Springfield were the first two cities to feel the effect of the rapid growth. To this day the Parish is still growing and expanding at a fast pace. The slow national economy has had some impact but not as bad as the rest of the United States. With oil over $100 a barrel we are seeing a steady increase in the drilling and exploration of oil and gas in this area. With the recent addition of The Bass Pro Shop and two golf courses shows proof that the Parish and Local Governments are actively seeking new industries to come to the area.

Albany and
Hungarian Settlement
The lively community of Albany near the eastern border of Livingston Parish was first developed as a railroad community. It was incorporated as a village on October 7, 1953, by proclamation of Gov. Robert F. Kennon. The town’s first officials were Mayor Grady Stewart, Aldermen B. G. Hess, Louis Bartus and Wilford Cowart, and Marshal Jessie Fletcher. The name was first officially used by the Illinois Central Railroad in 1906 when they plotted a route across Livingston Parish and announced the names of the stations on their new route. The origin of the name has several popular theories, with the most likely being that the residents wanted to name the community Natalbany because of its location along the Natalbany River. Since there was already a Natalbany (located north of Hammond), the people altered the name and came up with Albany. Albany developed as a crossroads community for the railroad and the Natalbany River, and later the crossroads of U. S. Hwy. 190 and LA Hwy. 43 (Turnpike Road). Situated on high land, it was a natural place for development. The first development near the area, however, was actually about three miles south of the present town at a sawmill community known as Maxwell, established by the Brakenridge Lumber Company in 1890.
